Did The Ordinary Release One of The Best Skin Barrier Repair Products?

4 Mins read

Navigating the vast world of skincare products can be daunting, especially when dealing with specific concerns like repairing your skin barrier. As the weather gets colder and the season for skincare treatments like chemical peels and laser is upon us, looking for skin barrier repair products is going to become more and more popular. So it makes sense that brands are releasing new products that fit into this category or breathing new life into the marketing of their current ones.

And the cult favorite brand The Ordinary has stepped into the skin barrier repair arena in a new way for them. As opoosed to their typicaly single ingredeint hero approach they released a product that is more formulation focused. In September 2023 The Ordinary released its pink elixir for barrier repair, The Soothing and Barrier Support Serum.

Peek at the Pink Potion: What Are the Basics of This Serum?

The Ordinary’s Soothing & Barrier Support Serum boasts a distinctive pepto bismal pink hue and is packaged in the brand’s signature glass bottle with a dropper. This emulsion, a thick liquid has no distinct scent, targets redness, and soothes the skin. This makes it an ideal choice after exposure to harsh weather, intensive skincare treatments, or just overdoing it in your own routine. You can find this product at most retailers that sell The Ordinary, including The Ordinary’s official website, Ulta, and Sephora. The product is $17 for a 30 mL or roughly 1 ounce.

Ingredients that Soothe: The Hero Ingredients In This Barrier Repair Serum

Clinical studies by the brand reveal impressive results, including a significant boost in skin hydration, reduction in redness, and enhanced skin texture after just one application. While these studies are promising, it’s crucial to approach them with a critical eye, considering they were conducted by the brand itself.

A fun fact about this product is that it gets it’s distinct pink color from the Vitamin B12 that is in it. There is not any added dye or colorant to achieve the vibrant and iconic hue. As far as skin barrier repair products go this serum has all of the usual suspects on the ingredients list. But with some slight tweaks that give this product the potential to be more effective. The hero ingredinets in this serum are:

Vitamin B12

Not to be confused with Niciamide, a different Vitamin B derivative Vitamin B12 is advertised on The Ordinary’s website as an ingredient that supports the skin barries and reduced dryness and redness. However there is limited evidence on Vitamin B12’s effect in topical skincare.

Bisabolol

This is a commonly used skincare ingredient in skin barrier repair products because it ews3ws3is anti-inflammatory and soothing. This can help reduce the redness associated with irritated skin.

Ceramide Complex

Ceramides are the glue that hold your cells in your skin barrier together. And when you exfoliate or skin or damage your barrier it usually means there are holes in the “ceramide glue” that is causing irritation. By using toical products with cermides it can be a ways to temporarily “patch” the holes while you skin heals its self.

2% Niacinaminde

Nicinamide is a very popular skincare ingredient. It is a form of vitamin B3 that is a powerful antioxidant, and its help with cell turnover to encourage your skin cells to heal faster.

Sugars

Sugars are large molecules taht sit on top of your skin and can act as water reserviors. They are not going ot penetrate your skin because they are too large, but they can hold on to water until you skin needs it. Dehydration can be a source of skin feeling tight and irritated, so having adequate moisture available to your skin cells is another way to soothe potentially irritated feeling skin. It can also help prevent the formation of wrinkles

Centella Asiaica Derivatives

Centela is probably one of the most popular soothing ingredients in skincare. It is widey used in K-beauty brands. Centella is dervied from a plant that is native to Asia. Like most plant-based ingredients there is not a ton of scientific studies taht have been done one centella. However the couple that exist indicate the terpenoids in the plant and there is a lot of evidene that supports its ability to soothe the skin can help speed up health. This formulation differs from others that have centella asiatiac in them because typically skin barrier repair products they only have centella extract, while this formulation has the actual actives from centella individually isolated and incorporated.

Personally, I integrate this serum into my nighttime routine on my intense exfoliation days. It offers a soothing touch to my skin when it’s most sensitive. Additionally the presence of ceramides aids in repairing the skin barrier, especially after exfoliation, which breaks down the ceramide “glue” between cells. The serum dries quickly, allowing for seamless layering with subsequent products. I find that about 15 minutes after I apply it my skin feels a lot better and not irritated from the exfoliating mask. Most of the time all fo the redness from the exfoliating mask is also gone within 15 minutes or the next day,

At $17 for 30 mL, The Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum provides excellent value. Despite a slightly higher price tag, this serum’s formulation includes multiple active ingredients, justifying the increase. The Ordinary’s reputation for value formulations remains intact, making this product a wise investment.

In conclusion, The Ordinary Soothing & Barrier Support Serum stands as a commendable solution for repairing your skin barrier. As far as skin barrier repair products go, thi sis defintely one that you should consider giving a try. Its rich formulation, coupled with impressive clinical results, makes it a valuable addition to any skincare routine. However, individual experiences may vary, so it’s crucial to patch-test and monitor your skin’s response. For those seeking an affordable, effective, and scientifically-backed option, this serum might just be your skin’s soothing best friend.
